Basque Country
Exploring Europe’s Basque Country is time traveling through the past
and future while enjoying the present. There are cave paintings,
medieval walled towns, a Renaissance University and other timeline
survivors from intrusions of the Romans, Moors, Vikings, Visigoths, and
Celts. This “country” without national borders also has the titanium
swoops of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, some of the world’s best
“left break” surfing, and memorable cuisine with both ancient
traditions and cutting edge chefs as well as San Sebastian’s claims of
“the most Michelin stars per capita of any city.” In the schools, the
kids are speaking Eskuda, a language that pre-dates any other in
Europe, but you can hear almost any modern tongue in the futuristic
conference centers or at the international film and jazz festivals. The
area appeals to all the senses, including a sense of mystery.
